In 2016 Matthew Borczon received an emerging artist’s grant from Erie Arts and Culture. He drove to New York City and started writing on the highway there. Ghost Highway Blues is the long stream of consciousness poem that followed.
Matt asked me to illustrate his poems. An honorable request that I gladly accepted. I had read the poems and they were very good, moving and impressive. In contrast to Matthew, I have fortunately never experienced any war conditions (and I hope to keep it that way), but these poems, in which many of his experiences have been processed, have been written so visually that the 16 illustrations originated almost automatically. Good poetry works that way. Now I can only hope my art does justice to the poems.
